Winter Refresh

Winter Refresh

This time of year tends to be one of cozying up. With the exception of holiday parties and shopping excursions, we like to spend the first few weeks of colder weather indoors, sitting by the fire with a warm throw blanket and a good book.

Before we truly settle down for the winter ahead, though, we like to do a couple of quick and easy home updates. It's partially for selfish reasons—if we're going to be spending so much time inside our homes, we want them to be as comfortable for us as possible. But also, this is the season of the surprise pop-in and the unexpected visitor. It's the time of year when people really do come to say hi just because they were in the neighborhood. As the holidays ramps up, things can get crazy and hectic, but knowing we have a calm and peaceful retreat in our home—and a beautiful space to welcome guests both expected and not—makes it all more manageable.

One of our favorite easy updates is for the living room, a place where we like to both relax and casually entertain. Something as simple as switching up the pillows on our couch gives the room new life.

We also like to dig up past years' holiday cards and family photos, and display them in festive frames throughout the house. It gives everything that warm, personal feel that's perfect for the holidays, and doubles as festive decoration. Another thing we do is stock the linen closet. Knowing that we have an excess of clean, beautiful sheets give us peace of mind. Then, when a kid's friend gets snowed in with us unexpectedly or a friend decides to break up a long holiday road trip with a night spent at our house or the washing machine breaks at the most inconvenient time possible, we know we're covered.

These little refreshes make everything calmer, but we like to make the update process itself easy. One way we do that is by picking a color scheme for any new items we might purchase for our homes, and for the holidays we love to with different shades of red. Our Mix & Match tool is also a great way to simplify a quick redesign because it lets you see what different patterns and colors look like together, before you commit to buying.

As we head into the thick of the holiday season, a refreshed home is just the thing to keep us calm!
