Heather Knight is a Savannah, GA based ceramic artist who has garnered attention from the worldwide art and design community since she opened Element in 2007. Her handmade porcelain work is widely recognized for its striking combination of modern textures, patterns and shapes inspired by nature. We asked Heather to tell us a little about Element Clay Studios and she summed it up perfectly:
"I am extremely dedicated to all hand built production, all of my items are made by hand from start to finish, each urchin bowl is pinched from a ball of clay, each vase is thrown on the wheel, each piece of texture is hand built and individually applied to a slab built form, each mark on my functional bowls is made by my hands. Every piece that leaves my studio is truly a one of a kind work."
- Heather Knight
So what started Element and why? Heather wanted a way to supplement her income in between teaching sessions at the local museum. Interior Design magazine contacted her late that year, and by May 2008, she resigned from her teaching position to pursue Element Clay Studio full time. Her studio is now based out of her home in Savannah, GA. The studio was originally designed by artist Julio Garcia titled and is made from recycled shipping containers!
Though the business has grown greatly in the last eight years, the backbone of the studio has remained the same. Heather is committed to remaining a craft based business, and all of the porcelain dishes, tiles, vases and decorative objects are 100% handmade and don't use any means of mass production. Adhering to these values allows Element Clay Studio to continue to produce only the finest, heirloom quality work.
As a small, family run company, they pride themselves in creating handmade, gallery quality work that exceeds expectations of even the most discerning customer or collector. Element wants to bring a little luxury to your life, and provide you with things you will love and cherish for a lifetime. Since our mission is so similar at Lime & Leaf, it was a natural fit for us to work with Heather and Element – the collection of handmade bowls are true artisan pieces that will add beauty and interest to any home:
“With my work I hope to bridge modern design and the natural world by paring down the essence of things to repetitive textures and basic form.”
- Heather Knight.
In September 2012, Heather's husband Mike Dale joined her in the studio, assisting with administrative duties, client communication, graphic design, marketing, shipping and various studio tasks. Mike has a background in visual arts; holding a BA in Art from West Virginia State University, a 17-year career in marketing and graphic design, and is an accomplished printmaker as well. He is a great addition to the studio and helps make sure that all the details are taken care of. We think the collection is a great addition to Lime & Leaf, see it here and take one of these stunning works home!
